Big Data: the silent fuel behind Artificial Intelligence (and why it matters in Marketing)

When I started exploring Artificial Intelligence more deeply, something caught my attention: we constantly talk about AI models, new tools and prompts… but much less about the element that makes all of this possible: data.

Because before ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or any other AI-powered tool, there is one essential foundation: without data, there is no Artificial Intelligence.

For years, we have heard about Big Data as one of those major technology trends that sometimes feel reserved for technical experts. But the truth is that Big Data is much closer to our everyday lives than we might think.

Every search, digital interaction, purchase, content recommendation or online behaviour generates information.

The difference today is that we are no longer just collecting data, we are learning how to transform it into better decisions.

So… what exactly is Big Data?

For a long time, I thought about Big Data simply as “a huge amount of data”.

But, of course, that definition is incomplete.

Big Data is not only about the amount of information we generate. It is about our ability to collect, manage and analyse complex data to extract meaningful insights.

It is often explained through the well-known 5 Vs of Big Data:

📊 Volume: The enormous amount of information generated every second.

⚡ Velocity: The speed at which data is created, collected and processed.

🌐 Variety: The different types of data available: text, images, videos, digital interactions, sensors and much more.

✅ Veracity: The importance of working with accurate, reliable and trustworthy information.

💡 Value: Probably the most important one: turning information into useful insights and decisions.

Because having more data does not automatically mean having more knowledge.

And this is where Artificial Intelligence comes in.

Big Data + AI: transforming information into intelligence

Artificial Intelligence allows us to identify patterns, relationships and opportunities that would be almost impossible to detect manually.

I like to think about it this way:

Big Data provides the information. AI helps identify patterns and possibilities. People bring context, judgement and purpose. And that human element is still essential.

Especially in areas such as marketing.

In the past, data mainly helped us understand what had already happened:

“This campaign performed better.”

Today, AI-powered analytics can help us move towards questions such as:

“Which audience segment is more likely to engage?”

“What behaviour patterns can we identify?”

“How can we create a more relevant experience?”

It is the shift from looking only at the past to making smarter decisions about the future.

How is this changing Marketing?

One of the biggest impacts of Big Data is the ability to understand audiences and customers better. Not as anonymous numbers, but through behaviours, needs and expectations. Some examples:

🎯 Smarter segmentation

Traditional segmentation used to focus mainly on demographic information.

Today, data allows organisations to understand behaviours, preferences and interactions in a much more dynamic way.

✨ Personalised experiences

Recommendation systems are one of the clearest examples.

Platforms can analyse behaviours and preferences to suggest content, products or services that are more relevant for each person.

The objective is not simply more communication, it is better communication.

📈 Prediction and decision-making

Big Data and AI also help organisations identify trends, anticipate behaviours and support better strategic decisions.

Moving from: “What happened?”

towards: “What could happen next and how should we respond?”

And where does Generative AI fit into all this?

This is where things become especially interesting.

For many years, advanced data analysis was mainly accessible to technical teams.

But Generative AI is changing the way many professionals interact with information.

Today, marketing and business professionals can use AI to:

🔍 analyse information

📄 summarise research

💡 generate ideas and hypotheses

🎯 understand audiences better

⚙️ optimise processes

This does not replace strategic thinking, it enhances it.

Because tools can process information, but people still need to define the right questions.

💭 My reflection

The more I learn about Artificial Intelligence, the clearer something becomes:

The future will not only be about knowing how to use more tools, it will be about knowing how to ask better questions.

Technology can process millions of data points, but we still need people who can understand:

✅ What problem are we trying to solve?

✅ Which information really matters?

✅ What decisions do we want to improve?

✅ What impact do we want to create?

Maybe the real competitive advantage will not come from having more data, but from our ability to transform data into better decisions.

Happy Marketing! 🎉
